October 17, 2010

‘Scouts Back to Nature’ is a programme conducted by ‘Persatuan Pengakap Laut Kelanasiswa’ of Universiti Malaysia Terengganu. This two days one night programme (15 – 16 October 2010) was held in Hutan Rekreasi Rantau Abang, Terengganu. A total of 50 students participated in this event both from secondary and tertiary level. Sea Turtle Research Unit (SEATRU) of Universiti Malaysia Terengganu was invited to give a talk on Conservation of Sea Turtle in Malaysia. The talk was given by Miss Yana Ali. During the talk, the participants were exposed on how far Malaysia had been involved in sea turtle conservation and how they can take part in sea turtle conservation. Besides camping and survival activities, they visited the Turtle and Marine Ecosystem Centre (TUMEC), Turtle Information Centre (TIC) and Aquatic Museum in Rantau Abang. The students too took an initiative to stop people from eating turtle eggs by collecting the petition “Stop eating turtle eggs” at the nearby village since turtle eggs is a local delicacy in Terengganu. A survey on the amount of marine debris was also conducted during the beach cleanup at Rantau Abang beach.
