Volunteer Program


This program was developed to provide volunteer assistance to the long-term tagging and in-situ egg incubation research and conservation project for marine turtles located in Chagar Hutang Beach, Redang Island. It was introduced in 1998, and has become very popular, especially among college and university students.

The volunteer program runs annually from April to September each year. Slots are of one week duration (Saturdays to Saturdays).

    I like to join the volunteer program in 2010 with some of my friends. I browse through the website and open up the volunteer_schedule sheet and saw some names are already there. But as i know, the registration starts at 14 Feb, does this means we can start to make reservation now?

      Dear all,

      Bookings for volunteer program 2010 will only be opened on 14 Feb 2010. Those name appeared on the list are volunteers from last year. We have to cancel their slots because of the bad weather in October 2009, and postpone it to 2010.

        Dear Dr. Juanita Joseph

        My friend and I are interested in your volunteer programme, currently we both reside in England but we are both incredibly interested in joining the volunteer team in this project for a week sometime this summer (during our summer break) however, we will still only be 17 at the time (both turning 18 before 2011 is out) and i was wondering whether this would in someway prevent us for volunteering. We both pulled out of a “World challenge” programme offered by our school due to financial conflict and we decided (as I previously visited redang in the summer of 2010) that this turtle protection project is exactly the sort of work that we’d completely immerse ourselves in and put 100% of our effort and hearts into.

        I sincerely hope that you’ll consider our partaking of the programme even though we might not be the correct age.

    Well, as long as you have prove from your institution/college, we will consider you as a student. We are not seeking any profit here but it is all for the long-term conservation program for the endangered turtles. So, if you think you can afford for the working fees, then it will be great.

    My friends and I are interested in taking up 2 slots, but we are from Singapore. How are we suppose to book the slots and make payment? Do we mail it to you?

      My daughter and I live in Australia, are we able to be part of your program ? We have done volunteer work with turtles previously here in Australia and are looking to rexperience something different.

    It is for your own safety. Max passegers for SEATRU boat is only 10 persons. 8 volunteers + 1 Research Assistant + 1 Boatman. before this we have to bring 2 boats to take volunteers from laguna jetty. we also try to reduce our fuel using.

    you only can start booking on 14 february 2010. you only have to sent your registration form when your name appear at the pre-registration table.

    From this website, I find that this programme is from Saturday to the following Saturday. But I have heard that volunteers are allowed to leave on Thursday. I would like to know is this true?

    For those that unsuccessfully booking for the slots, please keep updated with our website. 2 weeks (from 22/2/10) are given for the selected volunteers to make their pre-registration payment and send their registration form to us.

    If they unable to do that, and if we didnt receive any reply from them within 2 weeks their name will be taken out from the list. Once u see that the slots have any vacant, you can send your booking email again at First come first serve…..

    There will be NO WAITING LIST for this year volunteer slots.. So, please keep updated with our website.

    Hi! I am a UKM 3rd year medical student, I wanna take this SEATRU volunteer programme as my elective posting programme

    I have phone to ask n the person in charge said that its possible for me to do so.. but i need the name of supervisor and job title in order to complete my application form.. can u please send it to me? thx in advance n sorry for any inconveniences..

    Hi, im from KL. If i need to register at the 1st day of volunteer programmed, isn’t possible i take a midnight bus and reach at kuala terengganu in the morning? then from there, i should take boat to UTM? and what time its possible for last day programmed? should i needd to book ticket first? or buy any ticket from there? Please provide an info and map guide for direction, because not familiar with that area.

    Bookings for SEATRU’s 2010 volunteer program will be opened again this coming 15th March 2010. Do check out this website for more information on how to register. We are looking forward to see you at Chagar Hutang for another exciting season!!

    Please send together your name, I/C or passport number, occupation and slot chosen. Your booking result will be publish on 17th March 2010

    as i viewed the Volunteer Schedule, slot C clearly stated that there is 3 more vacancies. my application for the mentioned slot was replied with “Slot C was fully booked”, what happen?

    I’m very interested in this programme. But it seems that all the slots for this year are full….. if i want to join for next year, should i register now?? or i have to wait until next year when it is open for registeration??

      Hello there,

      That will not be a problem because life jacket is a compulsory whenever there are water related activities. Besides that, our staffs and research assistants are well trained.

    the cost do not include the transport to kuala terengganu.
    so let say i will fly from KL to Kuala Terengganu and my slot is 10/9-17/9.
    do i fly 9/9 or i can reach there 10/9 morning?
    what is the latest time i need to be there at the airport?
    and is there anybody meeting me up at the airport to bring me to chagar hutan?

      Hello Shaylee,

      Yup. Usually, the past volunteers will take Airasia early morning flight (from KL) and they will arrive here by 0800H. We will only be entering the island at 1200H.
