Tagging and Nesting Biology of Sea Turtles
A long-term tagging and nesting study of green and hawksbill turtles in Chagar Hutang, Pulau Redang was initiated in May 1993. This long-term project will provide basic, yet vital information on the population sizes, monitor yearly population fluctuations, study reproductive and nesting behaviour, and determine the success of “in-situ” and relocated nests. Measurements on the size of the turtles are also taken to estimate their growth rates. The turtles are also visually examined for scars, injuries and diseases. Barnacles were also removed where possible.
Tags, when recovered and returned from neighbouring countries will provide information on the extent of movements, feeding grounds and migration routes of turtles which nest in Pulau Redang, Malaysia.
* Tag serial no: 3501 – 3600 were donated to HOPE to be used to tag nesting sea turtles at Perhentian Island, Terengganu.
